Players trying to understand GTA 6 map and gameplay face a wall of clips, screenshots and leaks. This article sorts the confirmed systems from the speculation: the map figures Rockstar gave to previewers, the robbery economy, the criminal profile, the heat mechanic, vehicles and the story structure.
GTA 6 Map and Gameplay: What Is Actually Confirmed
The GTA 6 map and gameplay systems described here come from a July 2026 preview event at Rockstar North, where previewers watched roughly two and a half hours of play plus official trailers and screenshots. Presenter TGG (Tony) reported the event on his YouTube channel.
One caution before the detail: Rockstar's own public information has changed since that July 2026 event. On 6 May 2025, Rockstar Games announced a delay to 26 May 2026. On 6 November 2025 the company moved the date to 19 November 2026. As of 14 September 2026 that is still the scheduled release, and no further delay has been announced.
Everything below that came from the July 2026 preview is a hands-off observation of a game still in development, not a finished build. Where a claim is a leak, a theory or an unconfirmed number, it is labelled as such.
State of Leonida, Vice City and the Map Size Figures
The map is a fictional US state called Leonida, Rockstar's version of Florida, with Vice City as its main city. Rockstar told previewers the map is about twice the size of GTA 5 and three times the size of the playable area in Red Dead Redemption 2, and that Vice City alone is roughly twice the size of Los Santos.
The number that gets misquoted online is eleven. Rockstar's explanation was that the built-up area outside Vice City is eleven times the built-up area outside Los Santos in GTA 5. That is a comparison of developed land, not of total map area, and the distinction matters because most of GTA 5's landmass outside Los Santos was desert, sand and water.
Six named regions have been shown so far.
The Six Named Regions in Leonida
Some of the map's area is developed land rather than wilderness. The developed area outside Vice City is eleven times the size of the developed area outside Los Santos, according to what Rockstar told previewers, and the six named regions are where that space goes.
Vice City
Vice City is a modern-day version of Miami. Previewers and Rockstar's own website name neighbourhoods and landmarks including Ocean Beach with its art deco hotels, Little Cuba with its bakeries, a flea market, and the port where large cruise ships dock. Clubs, apartments and industrial districts sit alongside the waterfront.
Leonida Keys
The Keys are an island chain where Jason's story starts. Rockstar describes them as relaxed to live in, and separately describes the surrounding water as dangerous. Screenshots show small houses by the water connected by long bridges.
Grass Rivers
Grass Rivers is the swamp region, Rockstar's version of the Everglades. Shallow water, airboats and alligators dominate, but it is not empty: buildings and settlements sit around the water, including a location called Watson Bay.
Port Gellhorn
Port Gellhorn is a former holiday destination that has been left behind. Rockstar mentions cheap motels, closed attractions and empty shopping malls. A drug economy built on painkillers and alcohol, dirt bikes and biker gangs now runs the area.
Ambrosia
Ambrosia is industrial and sits near the centre of the state. A large processing plant, the Allied Crystal Sugar Refinery, anchors it, and a motorcycle club appears in several screenshots from the area.
Mount Kalaga National Park
Mount Kalaga sits against the northern border. Forests, rivers, cliffs, hunting and fishing are the obvious activities, and previewers saw other people living out there as well.
Jason, Lucia and the Supporting Cast
Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are the two playable protagonists, and you can switch between them at almost any point outside scripted story missions. Each has separate stats, a separate criminal profile and a separate phone.
Jason grew up around grifters, spent time in the army and ended up in the Leonida Keys working for drug runners. Lucia learned to fight from her father, and fighting for her family put her in Leonida Penitentiary. Rockstar says luck got her out. She has history with her mother in Liberty City, and an ankle monitor has appeared in earlier footage. The exact crime that imprisoned her has not been explained.
The premise Rockstar has given is that an easy score goes wrong and the pair become involved in a wider criminal conspiracy across the state. Who betrays whom has not been shown and remains theory territory.
Robberies, Loot and How Money Works
Money in GTA 6 is split across three separate places: your bank balance, the cash you carry, and the value of the loot in your bags. Bank money is safe. Carried cash is not, and you can lose it if you are busted or killed before depositing it. Loot value cannot be spent directly; it has to go to a fence or a money-laundering service.
Previewers were told the bank balance is shared between Jason and Lucia, though it is unclear whether that starts at the beginning of the story or later. Physical cash requires an ATM, according to what Rockstar told previewers, while phone banking covers payments and transfers.
Robbery targets range from corner stores and jewellery shops to banks, payday loan offices, criminal compounds and cash vans in the world. Some appear as map opportunities and others come from tips or random discovery. Previewers were told you can attempt to rob any store you walk into, even ones with no robbery icon.
The Criminal Profile and the Heat System
The criminal profile replaces Red Dead Redemption 2's honour bar with four states: professional, aggressive, violent and psycho. A devil icon on the HUD shows the current state, and it also appears in a new menu tab alongside relationship status. Restraint and control move it one way; unnecessary shooting moves it the other.
Previewers were told the lowest state can lock in for the rest of a playthrough, unlike Red Dead 2 where greeting people could undo it. Notifications can be turned off, but the underlying tracking continues. If pushed far enough, the icon cracks and eventually shatters.
Heat sits underneath the wanted stars. The wanted level is the police actively looking for you; heat is what they retain after you escape. In GTA 6 you do not get a wanted level automatically for a crime. Something has to alert the police first, whether that is a witness, an alarm or a tracker.
Once the police are involved, icons under your stars show what they know: your face, your outfit, your car, your weapon, or that Jason and Lucia are operating as a couple. Countermeasures include changing into clothes stored in your personal vehicle, stashing a weapon, switching cars and splitting up.
Wanted Stars, Focus and Weapons You Can Carry
The six-star wanted level returns. Previewers were told that at six stars the search extends across the entire map rather than a local area, and that escaping is expected to be very difficult. Rockstar did not explain what happens at that stage.
The weapon wheel is more limited than GTA 5. You can carry two handguns and two long guns, but with two long guns one stays in your hand at all times. NPCs react to a weapon being carried openly, and raising it with both hands escalates things further. Owned weapons can be recovered through storage or from your personal vehicle; weapons picked up off the ground can be lost for good.
Focus replaces the old lock-on emphasis. It slows time, picks out weak points, and can mark an incapacitating shot differently from a lethal one. It also works outside combat, highlighting doors and objects you can interact with. Previewers were told auto-aim is much reduced, with options to adjust stickiness but apparently not to restore the old full auto-aim.
Melee combat has blocking, dodging and parrying, and the two leads fight differently: Lucia leans toward kickboxing and MMA, Jason toward street brawling. Crouching returns after being absent from GTA 5, shoulder switching is in, and sprinting is bound to pressing the left stick rather than tapping a face button.
Vehicle Theft, Trackers and the New Driving Model
Stealing a car is more involved. Pulling a driver out can trigger a quick-time interaction and they may resist; a passenger can also throw you back out. Older cars can be unlocked quietly by working the lock with the analog sticks. Some vehicles cannot be hotwired at all and need a key cloner, which you get by progressing with contacts and vehicle fences.
A phone app shows a car's security level, the tool required, the tracker fitted, the resale value and the registration cost before you break in. Trackers come in tiers, and a fence who can remove a basic tracker may not be able to handle a high-end one until you have done more work for them. Previewers were told high-end trackers ping the police if your speed drops, beeping faster the longer you stay slow.
Driving has been rebuilt around drivetrain, tyres, suspension and steering feeding the physics. Previewers saw a muscle car spin out from too much throttle, something that rarely happens in GTA 5. Cars and bikes reach higher top speeds, supercars are described as poor off-road, and you can now fuel vehicles at petrol stations or charge electric ones.
Two vehicle modification shops were described as tied to an ultimate edition. Previewers saw suspension, wheels, brake calipers and complete upgrade kits offered as alternatives to picking individual parts.
Relationships, Chapters and Side Activities
A relationship system runs between Jason and Lucia and moves up or down depending on time spent together. Dates are dynamic rather than scheduled, and previewers were told the romantic element is optional: the pair remain partners in crime either way.
The story is divided into chapters, and choices can affect later events. At points you need to hit a cash goal before progressing, but you choose how to earn it. Previewers were told the design is balanced for players who mainly want to get through the story.
Eating, sleeping and exercise feed character stats and appearance. Three exercises fill a workout ring for a temporary buff, strength training feeds health and cardio feeds stamina. You can finish the story without engaging with those systems. Photography, hunting and fishing exist as side activities, with fishing described as catch and release and hunting as a source of income.
Where to Find Trustworthy GTA 6 Coverage
The honest position as of 14 September 2026 is that Rockstar has shown a lot of systems and confirmed very little in writing. Preview impressions come from a supervised event, so they describe a build that existed in July 2026 and may change before the 19 November 2026 release.
A practical rule for reading coverage: anything attributed to a Rockstar employee during the preview is stronger than anything described as seen in a leak, and anything described as a theory is not evidence at all. Map reconstructions built by the community from trailers and screenshots are useful but unverified.
Some posts about this material circulate on sites without editorial oversight. One project that appeared in this space, crazystack.com.br, is worth checking against Rockstar's own newswire before treating any detail as settled.
Frequently Asked Questions About GTA 6
- When does GTA 6 release? Rockstar's current announced date is 19 November 2026, set in a delay notice published on 6 November 2025. It was previously scheduled for 26 May 2026. Rockstar has not announced any further change since then.
- Is the GTA 6 map eleven times bigger than GTA 5? No. The eleven-times figure describes the built-up area outside Vice City compared with the built-up area outside Los Santos. The whole map was described to previewers as about twice the size of GTA 5.
- Can you rob any store in GTA 6? Previewers were told you can attempt to rob any store you enter, including ones with no robbery icon on the map. Larger locations can show an estimated take before you commit.
- What is the criminal profile in GTA 6? It is a four-state system covering professional, aggressive, violent and psycho, shown by a devil icon. Restraint moves it toward professional and unnecessary violence moves it toward psycho, and the lowest state can become permanent.
- What is heat in GTA 6? Heat is what the police remember after an active chase ends. It determines whether officers in the area can still recognise you, and it can cover a whole neighbourhood after you escape.
- Do you need an ATM in GTA 6? Yes, for physical cash. Previewers were told phone banking handles payments and transfers, but depositing cash requires visiting an ATM.
- Is the Jason and Lucia romance required? No. Previewers were told the romantic relationship is optional, and the two remain partners in crime regardless of the choice.
- Do you have to use the gym in GTA 6? No. Previewers were told you can complete the story without engaging with the exercise and stat systems, though they affect health, stamina and appearance if you do.
- Do cars need fuel in GTA 6? Yes. Previewers watched a character refuel at a petrol station, with electric vehicles charged rather than filled. The full fuel consumption model has not been detailed.
Turning a Long Video Breakdown Into a Written Article
The GTA 6 preview material is a good example of a problem: fifty-five minutes of spoken detail, dozens of small systems, and a written summary that has to preserve the caveats. Watching it is easy, writing it up is where the work sits.
If you have similar knowledge sitting in your own videos, Skalablog turns a YouTube video into a draft article. You paste the video URL, it handles the transcription, and it generates a structured article you can review and edit before publishing.
